05 Feb The Story behind Kateka Safari & Wellness Lodge
In November 2022, Trevor Savage took the decision to leave Ulusaba Game Reserve and Sabi Sands where he had been Head Ranger for seventeen years to start his own venture. Backed by one of Trevor’s repeat clients who had a vision to launch something different in the safari space, Trevor and his family set out on the exciting quest for a new lodge and in October 2023, Kateka Safari & Wellness in Greater Kruger was launched making its mark in slow safari, appealing to guests who want to immerse themselves in the bush & surrounding wildlife whilst also focusing on rejuvenation and wellbeing.

Kateka is equally good for first time safari goers of experienced nature lovers
Trevor has created an intimate lodge with a team that excels in their particular specialism, from football loving chef Shane to Natalie, the spa Manager whom I swear has been sent from a higher being, and Darren whose knowledge of the reserve is exceptional.
The location is not as well known as Sabi Sands and Timbavati for example but here are a few reasons to have it on your radar and offer clients the chance of an authentic safari experience;
Feeling of discovery – fewer people know about it
-Low density of game vehicles compared to other more well known reserves – no back up queue of vehicles at a sighting or radio chatte
-60,000 hectares of traversing
-Sightings are earned
-Alone time with the animals – no time limits
-Part of The Greater Kruger ecosystem like Sabi Sands – no fences
-Big Five – same migration patterns. Leans towards a raw bush experience rather than the “polished” experience of other reserves
-Emphasis on tracking, ecology and bushcraft
-Exceptional value – guests are paying for the experience rather than “the name”

Kateka is a small, intimate Safari lodge with a focus on flexibility
Elegant, modern and luxurious, Kateka’s 5 suites and 3-bedroom villa are ideal for unwinding in the wilderness.
It is easy to access by private charter from Cape Town or Johannesburg directly into the lodge.
Experienced rangers and management team are on hand to make the most of your stay with game drives, walking safaris, sound safaris and even K9 anti poaching experience.
Sound Safaris allows guests to tune into the sounds of the bush at a sighting as well as viewing the game. It brings guests closer to the wild—not by seeing more, but by hearing it differently.

Kateka has a state of the art wellness centre
The serene environment of Kateka’s wellness centre is the perfect place to disconnect from external distractions and immerse in the healing power of nature.
